La Tomatina (Tomato Throwing Festival)

La Tomatina is the world’s biggest tomato throwing festival. This festival started on the last Wednesday of August in 1945 so that tomato fight in Buñol near Valencia happens every year on the last Wednesday in August.

The origins of La Tomatina aren't clear with several theories explaining how Buñol has become home to the world’s biggest tomato fight festival. Some believe it happened when two boys got into a fight during a parade and began lobbing tomatoes from a vegetable stand at each other. Others believe the tomatoes were thrown to protest an unfavourable decision by the city council or launched at a particularly bad musician.

Rules of this festival

The city council follows a short list of instructions for the safety of the participants and the festival:

  1. The tomatoes have to be squashed before throwing to avoid injuries.
  2. No other projectiles except tomatoes are allowed.
  3. Participants have to make way for trucks and lorries.
  4. After the second shot indicative of ending the tomato hurl, no tomatoes should be thrown.
